Treatments for Redefining Your Jaw and Getting Rid of a Double Chin
We are often our own worst critics. Mirrors and the proliferation of the “selfie” make us see what we often perceive as flaws. The double chin is one of those parts of people’s appearance that they often want to change.
This is a common problem, and it makes many people self-conscious. However, plenty can be done to help reduce the appearance of a double chin and define your jawline.
Causes of a Double Chin
While this article discusses the double chin, it is often a symptom of other health problems. Obesity is a significant problem in the United States, and the double chin usually comes along with that. This is certainly not a cosmetic problem, and it comes with comorbidities such as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.
This is not the only cause of a double chin, though. As we age, skin loses its elasticity and can droop. Genetics also play a part in the development of a double chin. Treatments are available that can help no matter the cause.
Understanding the Treatments
Double chin removal can be categorized into natural solutions, surgery, and medical cosmetic treatments. These treatments offer semi-permanent or permanent solutions, but they each come with their own set of caveats.
Treatment: Diet and Exercise
It should go without saying, but a healthy diet and regular exercise can help you lose fat. Specific exercises can also be done to make the jaw more defined and pull in the skin between the chin and the neck. For example:
- Chin Raises: This involves sitting or standing up straight and tilting your head back like you are looking at the ceiling. Then, you must move the jaw forward, pointing the chin toward the ceiling. It should be done 10-20 times per day.
- Lion’s Roar: This exercise involves opening the mouth as wide as possible and sticking out the tongue as far as possible, holding the position for 10 seconds. Then, relax the jaw and tongue. It should also be performed up to 20 times a day.
- Swishing Cheeks: This is the same motion a person does when using mouthwash or rinsing the mouth after brushing teeth. It can be done with air or water. This should be done 5 to 10 minutes, 10-20 times daily.
Treatment: Plastic Surgery
Several different surgeries can help correct the sagging associated with a double chin. There are three surgeries in particular; those are:
- Liposuction: Liposuction uses a small tube inserted into the area under the chin (where a surgeon has made an incision) to vacuum out the fat.
- Face & Neck Lift: A facelift and neck lift tighten the skin around the jaw and are sometimes done together to achieve optimal results
The recovery time for surgery is one to two weeks, and swelling and bruising at the site occur as a person recovers. Surgery is the most invasive of all the treatment options.
Treatment: Kybella
Kybella injections were approved in 2015 as the only treatment for the submental fat that creates the double chin. The injection uses a chemical naturally occurring in the body: deoxycholic acid. It is a fat-dissolving compound that is found in the gallbladder.
These injections can hurt and cause swelling at the sight, but it should only last for a day or two. People can see results quickly, even after the first treatment. It is a quick and easy process.
