What Are The Causes of Thin Lips?

Obviously, the lips a person is born with depend on their genetic makeup, but other factors can increase the likelihood of thinning lips.

While plump lips are considered desirable, there is nothing wrong with thin lips. It is a natural process of loss of collagen throughout our lives, and our lips will become narrower and more wrinkled. Protecting your skin from the sun and drinking plenty of water will slow aging.

Smoking and sun exposure tend to speed up aging through skin damage, causing dryness and loss of elasticity. Certain chronic conditions, such as lupus and sclerosis, can also cause lips to thin.

Lip Enhancement Treatments

There are several ways to make lips look more desirable. Home remedies include lip balm, lip scrub, lip plumpers, and makeup, while in-office solutions from cosmetic medical professionals include Botox, lip fillers, and laser treatments.

• Lip Balm: Lip balm and lip gloss target the skin of the perioral area for protection and hydration. It keeps the lips from being chapped and dry, which can make lips look thinner. 
• Lip Scrub: These can be bought at cosmetics stores or can be created with honey, sugar and a bit of oil. Place it on the lips for a short period of time, then cleaned off with a warm damp cloth, exfoliating the sensitive skin of the lips. This refreshes the skin and when this is followed up with moisturizer or lip balm will leave lips looking healthy and plump.
• Lip Plumpers/Boosters: These cosmetic products use vitamins or an irritant to increase blood flow to the lips, temporarily plumping them. They can be used alone or along with lip gloss or lipstick.
• Makeup: Lip liners and lipstick can make a person’s lips appear fuller.
• Lip Fillers: Lip fillers are dermal filler solutions injected into the perioral area by medical professionals to temporarily “fill in” the lips to make them plump and youthful-looking. These solutions contain a natural substance called hyaluronic acid, which the body produces to increase collagen production. Hyaluronic acid will plump lips for up to 18 months in some cases.
• Lip Flip: Neurotoxin injections are commonly used for wrinkle reduction by numbing the nerve and muscle activity beneath the skin. Using this same technique on the perioral area can give the appearance of a lifted or lipped upper lip. By relaxing the lip muscle you’ll notice a fuller lip shape.

Post Treatment Recovery and Treatments

Here at C10 Wellness we offer both lip filler and lip flip treatments to patients who want to enhance their lips. Typically these appointments are quick and the results are everything our patients want. 

The lips will be slightly swollen, and ice can be applied to avoid bruising and pain. Patients can usually go right back to normal levels of activity within reason. However, they may want to avoid using a straw while drinking (to prevent puckering) and consuming alcohol or any other blood-thinning substances that may contribute to bruising.
