Miami-based skin care professionals share the truth about acne and the treatments that can help it.
An Overview of the Causes of Acne and Its Available Treatments
Pimples, papules, pustules, zits, all these are names used to describe various forms of acne. Most people have experienced acne in one form or another, but those who suffer from moderate to severe acne may have real physical and mental discomfort because of it.
As certified professionals of skin care, we have solutions to the troubles that come along with stubborn acne, but first, let’s discuss what it is and what causes it.
Acne: A Breakdown of Definitions
The basic definition of acne is a clogged hair follicle or pore. This can come in many forms from a simple blackhead to full blown cystic pustules and lesions. It starts when oil and dead skin cells get caught within a hair follicle, this then tends to cause something like an immune reaction, inflammation(redness and irritation) and sometimes pus formation.
Even blackheads are considered acne because they are clogged follicles, even if there is no redness or irritation. Cystic lesions can be large, red, and painful, and can cause damage to the skin.
Causes of Acne and Myths That Surround It
Of course, most people have some idea about the causes of acne, but there are actually many commonly held ideas that have been recently or not-so-recently disproved by scientific study.
Let’s discuss the verified reasons behind the formation of blackheads and whiteheads.
- Genetics: There is a certain amount of genetic tendency involved in the formation of acne. If your parents experienced severe acne, you will be more likely to have similar issues.
- Age: While people of any age can be affected by acne, it is most common among teenagers.
- Excess Oil Production: If you tend to have oily skin, you may be more likely to experience breakouts.
- Hormones: Acne tends to develop at certain points in women’s menstrual cycle as well as for teens experiencing puberty. Hormonal changes during pregnancy and perimenopause can also result in breakouts.
- Bacteria: Everyone has bacteria on their skin, but occasionally it can cause an infection that leads to the papules and pustules associated with acne. Cystic acne often needs treatment with antibiotics due to this.
- Inflammation: The body’s inflammatory response can be triggered by a clogged follicle, causing redness, soreness, and pus formation.
This covers the causes, but what about those old wives’ tales about food and hygiene? A dirty face does not create acne. While it is best to wash your face daily, this is not a recipe for completely clear skin. Also, greasy foods such as french fries or fatty foods like chocolate do not cause acne either. Diet has very little to do with acne.
There has been some evidence that complex carbohydrates like bread can exacerbate an already existing acne problem, but there has not been enough study in this area to confirm the findings or to conclude that any particular food causes acne in a large portion of the population. Our recommendation is that you always focus on eating a balanced diet and moderate excessive junk food.
Shouldn’t You Just Leave It Alone? Consequences for Your Skin
While there are times when leaving pimples alone is a good choice, leaving extensive acne untreated can be detrimental to your skin.
Acne can result in hyperpigmentation of the skin or hypopigmentation. Acne scarring affects the look and texture of the skin as well. These skin issues are difficult if not impossible to completely correct.
